Compact spaces that do more with less.

Small Contemporary Bathroom

A modern look with character and depth.

Though homeowner Carl Lapointe’s Montreal loft is only 540 square feet, he didn’t shy away from adding big and bold design elements. In his principal bath, he selected a richly-grained zebrano wood vanity and inky Brazilian slate tiles that stand out against white walls.

Small Black & White Bathroom

Sharp black accents punctuate this airy space.

Designer Jenna Cadieux gave this petite family bathroom a tailored look by sticking to a timeless colour palette on the walls, shower curtain and floor tiles. The roman blind — a steal at just $17 — lets in plenty of natural light, while still offering privacy.

Blue-Patterned Powder Room

A quirky blend of print and shine.

Deep blue trim, splatter-print wallpaper and tiny birds on roman blinds give this small bathroom lots of personality. Hits of warm gold and brass on the ornate mirror, picture frame and ruby-lined pendant help balance the cool colour palette.

Handsome Powder Room

Graphic wallpaper makes a strong statement.

Geometric wallpaper by David Hicks adds bold pattern to this main-floor powder room. Designer Sara Bellamy brought in a tailored navy vanity and simpler fixtures to balance the effect and keep the room from looking too busy.

Family Bathroom Makeover

A thoughtful and cheerful redesign.

Once a cramped and dated space, style editor Stacey Smithers’ bathroom is now bright, fresh and efficient. A new built-in linen closet (behind door) provides welcome storage, while a floating vanity and toilet establish a lighter look. Hanging the shower curtain close to the ceiling also helps emphasize the room’s height, while adding a burst of lively colour.

Serene Bathroom

A streamlined space with pretty details.

In her renovated bathroom, senior design editor Sarah Hartill went with a clean-lined double vanity and soft, grey-veined wall tile. A large photograph of floating lily pads, shot by Michael Graydon, makes a beautiful and unique finishing touch.

Family-Friendly Bathroom

A pale blue ceiling draws the eye up, creating the illusion of height.

White subway tile on the walls and graphic hexagonal floor tile ($4.26/sq.ft.) give the bathroom a durable, water-tight shell. Design editor Sarah Hartill adapted two tall pantry cupboards to fit the narrow spaces flanking the tub. A navy and white window shade ($7/m) and funky shower curtain lend a cheerful vibe. A slip-covered stool ($50) is easy to wash and gives homeowners Rachel and Greg Meikle a comfortable place to sit during the kids’ bath time.

Luxe Powder Room

Elegant details shine in this sweet bathroom.

Toronto designer Theresa Casey pulled out all the stops in this pretty powder room, going with gold-toned hardware, a rich marble countertop and sculptural sink. Petite spaces like this are great opportunities to try out more extravagant tilework, like the glazed ceramic pattern seen here, as you only need to cover a few square feet.

A mirrored medicine cabinet is a classic and simple storage solution.

To make this small bathroom feel larger and brighter, design editor Joel Bray went with a crisp white palette on the walls, tile and vanity, and mounted a large medicine cabinet to neatly house everyday essentials.

A compact space with rustic character.

Painted out in a soothing putty tone, the trimwork in designer Philip Mitchell’s main-floor bath looks charming — not overwhelming. A deep farmhouse sink and bi-fold shutters enhance the space’s pastoral appeal, while marine sconces are a nod to the home’s Maritime location.

Cottage-Style Basement Bathroom

A clever reno and crisp colour palette defy this room’s subterranean location.

Placing this shower beside the plumbing shaft made room for a freestanding sink in the small bathroom. New plumbing was added in the laundry room, and the HVAC ducts were raised into the ceiling joists to allow for as much headroom as possible.
